Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are banking heavily that Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to be the biggest hit of 2021. With the marketing hype reaching a fever pitch, new videos are popping up left and right. Some of it is the cast doing their press tours, but some new action clips shed more light to the plot and events of the movie. What new elements are shown from Spider-Man: No Way Home from these clips? Check out the breakdown below.
First minute of the opening scene
The first clip shows nearly a minute of what appears to be the opening scene. It is immediately after the bombastic end credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) where Peter Parker’s Spider-Man identity is revealed by J. Jonah Jameson at the heart of New York’s Time Square. As shown since the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer earlier this year, the pair of Peter and MJ are caught in the midst of the alleged murder of Mysterio who had become known by the public as a superhero. Peter and MJ are accosted by people and emotional questions are thrown as to whether MJ is Spider-Man’s girlfriend and if he did kill Mysterio. Before things escalate further, Peter grabs MJ and swings away from the anxious and angry crowd. After getting some distance with MJ screaming all the way, Peter stops on top of a building under construction to call Ned on his smartphone. But all both of them can say is “dude” to each other with regard to the situation of Peter’s secret identity being exposed. Their brief exchange is cut short by MJ reminding Peter they’re on top of a precarious perch and calling out “dude” at Peter herself.
Doc Ock fight
Another major clip centers on the freeway battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina). Although teasers and trailers have shown quick looks at the action, the new clip offers a major revelation. After Doc Ock greets Peter, he asks what the latter did with his machine. This is a callback to the events of Spider-Man 2 where Otto Octavius built his invention: a generator that produces and self-sustains energy equivalent to a small sun. Of course, in the original circumstances of that film, control of the machine could not be maintained. As it created a powerful electromagnetic field and grew larger the more matter it drew into itself. However, the day was saved when Peter convinced Octavius to help him and the repentant scientist sacrificed himself by collapsing the machinery into the river. But these events took place in a different reality and Octavius is unaware that this is a different Peter Parker. It should be noted that Doc Ock appears to be acting erratically and violently again, implying that he has succumbed to the influence of his mechanical arms once again, throwing cars at his perceived enemy.
More key scenes… but still no sign of the rest
Still other clips have surfaced from TV spots and teasers, showing the fate of Green Goblin’s mask. Although the circumstances are not shown, it does confirm Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe) is going to smash the mask and settle for his face being exposed. Meanwhile, another clip has Doctor Strange and Spider-Man confronting each other on top of a train. This time, their dialogue adds context to the box. It appears it is meant to contain either the spell that was botched or a different spell that will lead to everyone coming to their world, as Strange exclaims. Peter’s willingness to take that chance seems to be his attempt at saving the lives of the villains that apparently perish due to fighting Spider-Man. And then multiple Spider-Men appear… although not in the way fans expect, as it is just a series of after-images of Tom Holland’s Wall-crawler falling through portals. While these new clips have revealed more context of the key events already revealed before, the one revelation every fan is waiting for which is confirmation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are appearing as their versions of the Web-head. But to the credit of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, there are still no confirmed leaks of when or if the older Spider-Men will be joining Tom Holland in the upcoming film. Can the studios keep this up before the release? Will there be a third full trailer released before the film arrives? We will keep an eye out for that! Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, J.K. Simmons, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Rhys Ifans, Thomas Haden Church, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Benedict Wong. The Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures superhero film arrives in theaters on December 17, 2021.
