The Hollywood debut of SEGA’s furry mascot was a huge success and its sequel, which came out in April, was an even bigger hit. Meanwhile, a few months earlier, Uncharted also topped the box office charts despite the lack of love from critics. While last year’s Mortal Kombat wasn’t a box office darling (nor a critical one), it drew fans enough to HBO Max that Warner Bros. wants to do a sequel. A few months after Moon Knight writer, Jeremy Slater, joined to pen the script for the Mortal Kombat sequel, Slater has an exciting update. In an interview with The Direct, Slater revealed that he’s already halfway through the script. More importantly, Slater claims that he’s working closely with the studio and the film’s director. The latter is interesting since Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed who’s directing the film.
Of course, we wouldn’t be surprised if Simon McQuoid returns to direct Mortal Kombat 2 following a successful feature film debut. Even though there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the forthcoming follow-up, fans are excited nonetheless. In particular, fans are eager to find out who will portray Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The fan-favorite Mortal Kombat character was missing from the reboot, but the ending teased that Cage will play a role in the sequel. Some of the names that have come up are Ryan Reynolds, WWE’s The Miz, Josh Hartnett, and Scott Adkins, among others. Ultimately, with Slater still only 50% done with the Mortal Kombat 2 script, pre-production is still ways away for the video game adaptation, all but confirming that the sequel will take its sweet time hitting theaters. If it’s any consolation, Warner Bros. Discovery nailed the formula with its first attempt. If the sequel can continue building on what Mortal Kombat did last year, fans won’t mind waiting for at least 2 years. After all, audiences waited for decades for the live-action adaptation of Mortal Kombat, so what’s the harm in waiting for a little bit longer?
