Following a starring role in 2019’s Detective Pikachu, Ryan Reynolds put on the shoes of the non-playable character, Guy, who is the main character in Free Guy. After being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Free Guy has received both critical acclaim and commercial success. As a matter of fact, Free Guy just scored $28.4 million in the box office, which is a pandemic-best for an original movie. Because of the film’s success, a sequel was all but guaranteed, and Reynolds himself has now confirmed that Disney is interested in doubling down on the original video game movie.
Is Free Guy 2 confirmed?
Getting to this point hasn’t been easy for Ryan Reynolds and Free Guy. Directed by Shawn Levy, Free Guy was delayed more than a couple of times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and even survived Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. While the movie’s success was by no means certain considering the history of video game movies, Free Guy has instead gone on to become one of the best of all time. Reynolds’ comedy film received a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 82% average score from 202 reviews and a 95% audience score from more than 1,000 audience ratings. When you consider those metrics and the wider circumstances in which they were achieved, it was a no-brainer for Disney to confirm a sequel.

At the moment, Reynolds is set to star in at least four films over the next two years. This includes the highly anticipated third Deadpool film. The upcoming superhero film is hinted to start shooting in 2022 and is believed to be where the wisecracking mercenary finally joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given Reynold’s busy schedule, it will be a while before we see any news of Free Guy 2.
