According to David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, console manufacturer, Sony, shipped 7.5 million kilograms of products into the United States last month. This coincides with the 400% increase in PS5 units from last year. In comparison, the stocks of the Xbox Series S/X only had “minor” improvements at 89% while the Nintendo Switch saw a decline of 59%. Gibson notes that Nintendo also uses airfreight, so there might not be as big of a dip in Switch availability. Then again, we wouldn’t be surprised if Gibson’s numbers aren’t far off. It’s worth noting that Nintendo warned of an incoming Switch shortage last year. If nothing else, this means that getting a PS5 in time for God of War: Ragnarok, which will be out on November 9, is possible. At least, if you’re located in any of the 50 states. This positive development may reflect in Europe as well. We’ll just have to wait for more data.
— David Gibson (@gibbogame) October 11, 2022 Sony has had a relatively quiet year so far. The only other big release, Horizon Forbidden West, suffered from coming out around the same time as Elden Ring. Although it should’ve still sold enough to get at least one more DLC and even a sequel, we’ve no doubt Sony would’ve preferred Forbidden West to launch with minimal competition. Thankfully, Sony will have a chance to make up for it with God of War: Ragnarok. Hype is a double-edged sword, as CD Projekt Red found out with Cyberpunk 2077 two years ago. But, restocking PS5s for the release of God of War: Ragnarok suggests that Sony has high expectations for the highly anticipated sequel. Fingers crossed, Ragnarok won’t fall short and catch up with Elden Ring, which already became FromSoftware’s best-selling game with one Game of the Year award under its belt.
