Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite made history back in 2019 as the first non-English movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Financially, the 2019 thriller has brought in hundreds of millions of dollars at the global box office with a limited HBO series coming soon. But, after wowing audiences with Parasite, Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up will be a science fiction movie that he will write, direct, and produce through Offscreen in conjunction with Dooho Choi for Kate Street Picture Company and Plan-B. According to Deadline, Bong’s upcoming sci-fi film is still shrouded in mystery. However, some facts have come up. For starters, Pattinson is in talks to star. Meanwhile, the film’s plot will reportedly take inspiration from Edward Ashton’s Mickey7, a novel that revolves around the story of an employee set to colonize Niflheim, an ice-filled desolate world. Mickey7 is specifically chosen because he is a disposable employee. Every time a Mickey7 dies, his memories are transferred to a new body, and he starts all over again. However, for some reason, Mikey7 finds a new clone, Mikey8, replacing him after returning to base following his death. It remains unclear just how much Bong will take from Mickey7. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if he takes much liberty in trying to turn his untitled sci-fi film into something unique and more of his own. Bong might even make changes to the entire narrative, much to the disappointment of the fans of the source material. Then again, audiences show know by now not to doubt Bong. His work on Parasite means that he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Here’s to hoping that Bong’s casting of Pattinson pushes through and the film ends up pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling as much as Parasite did back in 2019. In other news, Pattinson is currently slated to star in the upcoming DC superhero film, The Batman. Unlike what would have been Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie before he dropped out of the role, the Pattinson-led movie is another re-telling of the Caped Crusader’s origin story. Judging by the latest trailer, the film will feature classic Batman villains such as Riddler, Catwoman, and Penguin, with Joker potentially making an appearance.
