For starters, Warner Bros. Games Montréal just confirmed that the upcoming DC superhero beat ’em up title isn’t coming to the PS4 and Xbox One. The studio made the unfortunate announcement while dropping the latest preview for Gotham Knights. The 10-minute Gotham Knights demo features Red Hood and Nightwing showing off their individual fighting styles and how they’ll get around a Batman-less Gotham. Red Hood, in particular, looks like his main strength lies in ranged combat with his twin handguns. On the other hand, Nightwing’s fighting style, acrobatic, is a clear nod to Dick Grayson’s origin as a circus performer and is an apt description as the video shows the original Batman protege doing everything from somersaults to spin kicks as he takes out the bad guys. Elsewhere, the footage showcases Gotham Knights’ stealth gameplay, fast travel, the Court of Owls, customization options, and more. Gotham Knights’ selling point is its co-op campaign. In recent weeks, fans assumed that Warner Bros. Games Montréal had stealth dropped a four-player co-op for Gotham Knights after spotting a listing page of the game on the PSN store. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. The studio makes it abundantly clear that Gotham Knights will only support “up to 2 online players with PS Plus” and the PSN store page has since been updated to reflect that. What is perhaps the most disappointing part about Gotham Knights is that it’s only coming to the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. It feels like a gut punch to Batman fans waiting for a chance to play Gotham Knights to say that the game is a next-gen exclusive this late. After being delayed from its original release window last year, most looked forward to playing Gotham Knights after the studio finally gave the game a release date. Instead, those who haven’t upgraded to the latest console generation will have to find a way to get their hands on one in the next few months to play Gotham Knights. According to Warner Bros. Games Montréal, the decision was made to “provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.” Hopefully, the studio delivers on its promise and comes up with a quality product worthy of the Batman mantle. In other news, the recent merger might lead to an uptick in video games based on popular DC properties. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav reportedly wants to overhaul the DCEU, but part of his plans for the new combined entity is to “grow” and “bolster” DC games. The only DC Comics games confirmed to be in development are Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and the untitled Wonder Woman open-world project.
