Cavill is in full support of a Black Superman
Earlier this year, DC confirmed that Star Wars’ JJ Abrams is set to produce a Black Superman film. Naturally, this was met with some doubt by some of those in the fandom. It also didn’t help that there was another set of reports a few months ago that Michael B. Jordan was working on a separate Black Superman project for HBO Max. Jordan’s work makes sense considering that it will star Val-Zod, a different version of Superman from Earth-2. On the other hand, there are no details about Abrams’ Superman film, which is why fans were worried that it might retcon and change Kal-El’s skin color. However, Cavill, a fan favorite, had some candid words that should help ease anyone’s concerns about the upcoming Black Superman film. In an interview with THR, Cavill referred to Superman as an “ideal” and “an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts.” He also added that there’s no reason why there’s shouldn’t be multiple Superman. He referred to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie as an example of something wonderful even if it’s not tied to other DCEU movies. He also explained that it’s not unusual for “multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time.” Also, in the same interview, Cavill said that “The cape is still in the closet.” He clarified that he’s not closing any doors as far as coming back to play Superman again in the DCEU. Cavill went as far as to defend Superman’s actions in Man of Steel and that there’s still “a lot of storytelling” to do for his Superman. TLDR; there’s no reason not to have a Black Superman film. Cavill is all for it and Superman doesn’t have to be just a single person. Cavill is right. Superman’s skin color doesn’t matter, nor his gender orientation and even preference. Superman represents the best in all of us. Everything else is a moot point. At the end of the day, all that matters here is execution. Any kind of change will always get some pushback. The only way to minimize all the negative criticism is to make sure that it’s executed well. In the meantime, Cavill’s fans can watch him in The Witcher Season 2.
