He is still, however, finishing up his work as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The director is still performing his duties as an MCU director while plotting the course of rival DC Studios. In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, Gunn shared he had an easy time writing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. However, it was not the same with the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, describing the experience as “torture in every way.” “I’ll be honest, I wrote the screenplay in a few hours, so it just kind of spilled out of me. It was very easy,” Gunn said. “Everything about shooting it was easy. Everything about getting the performances out of people was easy, whereas Vol. 3 was torture in every way.” Gunn did not elaborate on what he meant by being tortured while writing the screenplay of his final Guardians of the Galaxy film. The build-up toward this final installment was a bit of an emotional ride for the director. Gunn was removed as director of the third movie after controversial tweets he made prior to his involvement with Marvel Studios resurfaced. Fans were outraged at the removal of Gunn and demanded his return. Marvel rehired the director six months later for a final outing with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The director and some of the actors also hinted that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will be the final film involving the original cast. Dave Bautista has stated that he does not want to do a Guardians of the Galaxy movie without Gunn. Gunn also gave a small update about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 during the interview. He shared that the movie is still in post-production with some visual effects shots still being worked on. “It’s a big movie, and it’s so different from the special because the special is so wacky and insane. The movie is so emotional, but it’s been a real joy making it. So, it’s coming along great,” Gunn reveals. “I still have a ton of visual effect shots I’m working on, and of course, putting the score together with John Murphy, which is gigantic. So those are the things I’ve been focusing on most, lately.” Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will stream on Disney+ on Friday, November 25. On top of this, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will open in theaters on May 5.
