Arash Amel, the scriptwriter who penned the Disney Plus movie, Rise, which is about NBA basketballer Giannis Antetokoumpo and his family, will write the movie and also serve as the executive producer. Amel also wrote the 2018 biographical war drama, A Private War, which starred Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, Tom Hollander, and Stanley Tucci, and earned Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Original Song. At the moment, Disney is keeping the movie’s plot details under wraps. However, the film will tell an original tale and will be a standalone IP. In other words, it will not be based on any existing Disney production from the same source, like the Aladdin franchise. One Thousand and One Nights, also known as Arabian Nights, is a collection of Arabian tales written over several centuries by different authors, translators, and scholars. The stories it contains come from different parts of Asia, as well as North Africa. During the Islamic Golden Age, the work was compiled in Arabic. However, some of the tales in the collection, like Aladdin’s Wonderful Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, were later additions to the original compilation. One Thousand and One Nights is one of the many tales in the collection of the same title. It tells the story of Sultan Shahryār who killed his unfaithful wife after her betrayal. The Sultan determines that all women are the same. So, he marries a new virgin every night and kills her in the morning. Eventually, he marries the vizier’s daughter Scheherazade, who tells him a story on their first night together. She ends the story on a cliffhanger and he delays her execution so she could finish it the next night. However, Scheherazade does this for one thousand and one nights until he loses his distrust for women. Disney originally adapted Aladdin as an animated film in 1992. The film received positive reviews and earned over $500 million to become the highest-grossing film of that year. It tells the story of a street rat who comes into possession of a magic lamp, which houses a wish-granting genie. However, he gets into trouble with an evil sorcerer who wants the lamp, and its genie, for himself. Disney’s most recent adaptation from the collection is based on the same material and is the 2019 movie, Aladdin. The film starred Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud, and Marwan Kenzari. The movie was directed by Guy Ritchie and went on to gross well over a billion at the global box office. In other news, Disney wants to release a new Star Wars game every six months.
