However, as Squid Game was always meant to be a one-off season, fans weren’t expecting a follow-up to come anytime soon. Although Netflix hasn’t given Season 2 of Squid Game a release date yet, it appears that the series’ creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is excited to share more about what’s to come soon. Dong-hyuk recently appeared with the rest of the cast of Squid Game on the red carpet before Sunday night’s Critics Choice Awards. When ET asked the Silenced director, Dong-Hyuk said that he is “working on it”, adding that they will “announce it soon” before asking fans to wait. He also pointed out the high expectations that Squid Game’s second season will have, and how he’d “like to please people with waiting for the season 2.”
Unfortunately, Dong-hyuk was mum about potential storylines that Squid Game season 2 might take up, which is opposite to Gi-hun’s actor from last year when he indulged interested fans. Speaking of, the end of Season 1 saw Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun win the titular deadly game and go home as a rich man. But, instead of using the money and opportunity to go after his daughter who has since moved abroad along with his ex-wife, the last few scenes of the show depict Gi-hun going back to South Korea with what many presume is renewed conviction to put an end to Squid Game. It will be interesting to see how Squid Game Season 2 will top the shock and awe factor of the first season. Even if Dong-hyuk reveals more details about Season 2 soon, we don’t think Netflix will rush the director, especially if it risks compromising the quality of the show. In the meantime, we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix ordered a spin-off series or two based on Squid Game. Dong-hyuk successfully crafted a world in Squid Game that fans will want to know more about. In particular, how and when did O Yeong-su’s Oh Il-nam come up with the Squid Game? Also, how exactly did the missing brother of Juno-ho, In-ho, end up becoming the Front Man? Do other games similar to Squid Game exist in South Korea and other parts of the globe? These are all questions that Netflix could explore as Dong-hyuk works on an equally viral second season for Squid Game.
